Traffic monitoring data from Christchurch City Council over the past three years has revealed the city’s busiest intersections and major roads.
The data is recorded during peak commuting hours only on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays to ensure a more consistent and accurate count.
Each intersection and major road has its traffic volume recorded at varying frequency, from every year to every three years, depending on its significance.
The five roads with the highest average vehicles a weekday are:
• Moorhouse Ave 52,646
• Brougham St 46,212
• Bealey Ave 42,221
• Main South Rd 38,531
• Blenheim Rd 35,899
Two of the four avenues and Main South Rd, take three of the top spots for the busiest routes.
Funding of $20 million for upgrades to Brougham St was cut in May, prompting criticism of the Government’s commitment to improving the city’s transport infrastructure.
The upgrade would have included lanes for carpooling, buses and motorcycles, intersection improvements, and a shared pedestrian-cycle path.
The five intersections with the highest average vehicles a weekday are:
• Deans Ave, Riccarton Ave, Riccarton Rd 24,773
• Blenheim Rd, Curletts Rd 24,745
• Moorhouse Ave, Durham St South 23,447
• Moorhouse Ave, Waltham Rd, Barbadoes St 23,360
• Brougham St, Selwyn St 22,232
