Two people have been taken to Christchurch Hospital after an explosion in Hornby this morning.
Emergency services were called to the incident on Waterloo Rd just after 9.30am on Monday.
Fire and Emergency NZ said crews from the Wigram and Spreydon stations responded to a hazardous substance callout, which was potentially a gas bottle leak.
A Fenz spokesperson said five cylinders in total had been affected.
“The situation is now contained, but our crews remain at the scene making the area safe,” the spokesperson said.
Two people were transported to Christchurch Hospital in a moderate condition.
Police were assisting with traffic management.
The New Zealand Herald has reported neighbouring businesses have been evacuated.
Waterloo Rd was closed between Racecourse Rd and SH1/Carmen Rd but reopened about 11.40am.
