Photos show how event signs have been placed near the McDonald's Merivale drive-through on Tuesday with a large line of traffic queued up behind them.
Said Christchurch Transport Operations Centre manager Simon Harty: "They [events signs] were put out by a traffic management provider engaged by the restaurant, due to the expected volume of patrons expected upon reopening.
"It was expected that traffic queuing would occur, hence the deploying of signage to alert other road users.
"The [city] council accepted the traffic management plans for the on-road deployments.
"We have been liaising with the Police District Command Centre with regards to traffic queuing at fast-food restaurants today.
"No further action is intended to be taken at this point," he said.
A McDonald's Merivale's manager who declined to be named estimated more than 1000 cars have been through the drive-through so far today. As they were speaking there were about 50 in the queue.
An email from CTOC on Tuesday afternoon said there has been "an increase in traffic, especially around fast-food drive-[through] restaurants".
