Southerlies, rain and snow on the way

Sunday's blast of sunshine and good weather looks to be short-lived for Cantabrians, with a southerly wind on its way and perhaps a touch of snow.

Temperatures reached a heady 23degC in some areas, but on Monday afternoon expect the southerly to come roaring in with occasional rain.

Showers with hail and snow to 400m is expected on Tuesday for Christchurch, but will clear by early afternoon.

Ashburton will also have cold southerlies on Monday afternoon with a high of 15degC, with showers and hail on Tuesday morning.

It is a bit brighter in Kaikoura, with showers clearing on Monday afternoon and perhaps a glimpse of sunshine, before it packs in for Tuesday morning with showers and hail.

Snow may affect Lewis and Porters passes on Tuesday afternoon on parts of the road above 800 metres.
