Snow has been falling on the hills around the Queenstown Lakes District overnight and this morning.

Webcams show a dusting on the Crown Range Road as well as the Cardrona, Remarkables and Coronet Peak skifields.

MetService meteorologist Andy Best said snow was down to 500 metres and could continue to fall into the early afternoon.

However, this would be gone by tomorrow, as there was a high-pressure ridge currently headed over the Tasman.

Weather was expected to be fine and sunny in the area in the coming days.

All main roads in the region remain open but the Queenstown Lakes District Council is urging drivers to carry chains if they are using the Crown Range Rd.

It advised motorists to "take it slow and drive to the conditions".
