Coffee Culture is one of the stores opening at the new Riverside retail complex in Ashburton, where Kmart is the anchor tenant.

“We are stoked to be coming to Ashburton,” Coffee Culture director Sacha Coburn said.

“There is a lot of development in the town, there is such a great vibe.”

The Ashburton Coffee Culture will be the twentieth store to open, joining the other stores located throughout Canterbury and the South Island.

“We are very committed to the South Island, and we have a real confidence in rural service centres, two of our busiest stores are in rural service centres, Rangiora and Rolleston so for us Ashburton is a perfect extension of that.”

Sacha said they had been looking for an Ashburton site for a long time.

“Riverside being close to the town centre and so much parking makes it ideal for us.”

One thing that helps Coffee Culture stand out from the competition is they stay open late into the evenings.

“Our focus is about creating a space for people to hang out, the cool thing is there is no alcohol involved, so after school you’d get teenagers for a hot chocolate and to study and use the free wifi, after work people can catch up with friends, it’s just another place to hang out in the evenings.

“We try to make sure there is something for all the different uses that people have for a community coffee shop.”

Sacha said the new cafe expects to create 10-15 new jobs for locals and they are also looking someone to partner with them and run the store.

“We would love for that to be someone local, someone who has dreamed of owning their own coffee shop but don’t know where to start,” she said.

“If they have got the dream, are community minded and love people we can help.”

Coffee Culture started in Sumner 26 years ago and was one of the first cafes to have coffee bean roaster on site.

It’s not just coffee on offer, they have light meals and plenty of treats.

“We have insanely good cakes and deserts and we are famous for our smoked salmon bagels,” Sacha said.

Coffee Culture Ashburton will be open in the Riverside complex in October.
