A new travelling exhibition at Ashburton Art Gallery aims to raise the profile of and promote fine art printmaking.

The Small Print exhibition opened at the weekend and is presented by the Print Council of Aotearoa New Zealand, a member run, non-profit organisation.

On display are close to 100 prints, none larger than A4 size.

The works demonstrate printing methods such as woodcut, monoprint, aquatint, etching, drypoint and collagraph made by artists from around New Zealand, and also Europe and the Pacific.

All works are available to purchase for $145.

Ashburton Art Gallery communications and exhibitions assistant Nicole Bourke said some of the prints were very limited editions and even some one-offs.

The annual touring exhibition was in Ashburton for the first time and gave people the opportunity to start collecting art at an affordable price.

She said the items displayed featured a wide range of subjects including birds, flora and fauna, Pasifika influences and also abstract works.

Running in conjunction with the exhibition, the art gallery will be hosting an adult workshop in printmaking on February 2.

Making prints with gelatin plates, participants will enjoy the quick and playful process, and the session is well suited to complete beginners to printmaking. The session will be run by art gallery staff member Simone Barnsdale.

All materials and equipment will be provided and those taking part can also bring textured materials to use, including lace, doilies or leaves.

Bookings for the hands-on activity can be made at the gallery reception.

The Small Print exhibition runs until February 23.
