Dunedin hairdresser Kylie Hayes has won international awards before, but an invitation to go to London and work for Angelo Seminara, who is Davines' international artistic director and a hugely influential world hairdressing authority, made this time particularly memorable.

She was presented with her award by Mr Seminara in Paris in June.

The competition, which she won as one of 25 international finalists, required hairdressers to provide a video and photographic submission demonstrating a creative use of the Flamboyage "meche'', a tool used for creating highlights in the hair.

Mr Seminara developed the meche, which Kylie took to a local graphic artist who laser-cut square shapes into it so she could stick the meche to the head and use like a stencil.

"It was all pretty overwhelming at first and left me wondering how I could leave Dunedin but I soon realised it is equally as good to be here and continue to be involved at an international level,'' said Kylie.
