Dunedin Dahlia Circle secretary Donna Burgess photographs a gladiolus flower at the Dunedin Horticulture Society Summer Show on Saturday.

The show, at the St Kilda Bowling Club in Royal Cres, featured more than 500 entries from the best of Otago home gardeners’ cultivations.

Flowers, vegetables and plants were on display among other home-made items, including floral decorations.

Show manager Neil Judd said the show had a historical legacy that dated back to when the society began in 1851.

He said the gardener’s challenge was to work to a season that was going all over the place.

"A gardener’s challenge is to anticipate what the weather might be if you’re planting for a timetable", he said.

Hundreds of people came to have a close look at the flowers on display.
