It was a blast from yesteryear at last night's Dunedin Study retro dinner, part of the 2016 New Zealand International Science Festival.

Cuisine from the different eras of the Dunedin Multidisciplinary Health and Development Study was enjoyed by a capacity crowd of 55 diners, dressed in clothing from their favourite decade.

New Zealand International Science Festival director Chris Green said the night put a different angle on the Dunedin Study while showcasing the culinary talents at Otago Polytechnic.

Jack Hanan (13) wore a grey suit and was dressed as Don Johnson, of Miami Vice.

Brother Jesse Hanan (11) came as fictional character Fu Manchu.

Their mother, Jill Rutherford (54), dressed in a 1980s outfit, said the night had been fun.

She reminisced with her sons about the Bee Gees, as they always tried to tell her their music was the best, she said.

Dame Elizabeth Hanan said she remembered the orange and brown fondue pots.

She was given three fondue sets in 1973, and the event was the first time she had had a cheese fondue.

After tasting his fondue, Jack said: "This will be my era [1970s], the cheese fondue.''
