Ross McClintock, of Dunedin, tries an electric bike on Saturday morning on Cargill St at a Dunedin City Council-organised event for Bike Wise Month.

Mr McClintock said he had a good experience on the bike; his only concern would be keeping an electric bike safe and secure since they were more expensive than other bikes.

DCC safe and sustainable travel co-ordinator Charlotte Flaherty said electric bikes were priced from about $2000, but were sometimes discounted.

The event was held to promote electric bikes as a far cheaper alternative to small cars.

They were perfect for Dunedin, where people were often put off cycling because of the hills, Mrs Flaherty said. Considering the wet conditions, there was an excellent turnout, with up to 40 trying out the bikes, she said.
