Female officer attacked

A female probation officer was left shaken after an attack in Dunedin by a teenage man, the Department of Corrections says.

Otago District community corrections manager Raymond Clark said a probation officer was assaulted at the Dunedin Central Community Corrections office in Lower Stuart St on Thursday afternoon.

The officer did not sustain any physical injuries but was left shaken, he said.

She activated a duress alarm and staff in the building reacted quickly.

''Our staff manage some of New Zealand's most difficult and challenging citizens and we take all assault incidents extremely seriously.''

Staff safety was a top priority and 70% of community correction sites were in the process of being upgraded.

Senior Sergeant Craig Brown, of Dunedin, said police gave an 18-year-old man a warning after he was arrested for disorderly behaviour.
