Mosgiel teenager Renee O'Brien is hitting the right notes.

The 15-year-old Kaikorai Valley College pupil won four awards at the Whitestone Country Music Awards earlier this month.

She was ''pretty pleased'' with the effort in winning the intermediate duo, intermediate variety, intermediate gospel and intermediate overall categories.

The awards were the latest in a long line for the talented singer and guitar player.

Music ran in her blood and she was introduced to country music by her grandmother, she said.

''I have always heard it from her. I have always liked country music, so I stuck with it.''

Renee was looking forward to the Golden Guitars next year and believed she was in with a chance to take home awards from the annual celebration of New Zealand country music.

Her role models in country music were the Topp Twins, she said.

''I have loved them ever since I was really little and admired them.''

She hoped to pursue a career in music but was not sure whether it would be on the stage.

When asked if she wanted to become a touring musician, she said: ''I haven't really thought about it.

''I'd like to be a singer teacher, though.''
