No decision on open inquest into Bachop's death

A coroner is yet to decide whether to hold an open inquest into the death of former Dunedin City Council Citifleet team leader Brent Bachop.

Mr Bachop died suddenly in May last year, days after being approached about irregularities within his department, and his death was referred to the coroner.

Subsequent investigations by Deloitte and Dunedin police concluded he was at the centre of the $1.5million Citifleet vehicle fraud involving the sale of 152 cars and the pocketing of proceeds over more than a decade.

The Otago Daily Times was told yesterday there was still no decision on whether an inquest would be held or the matter dealt with ''on papers'' without the need for a hearing.

The decision was initially put on hold while investigations into the Citifleet fraud continued.

Since its completion, Otago Southland coroner David Crerar was now still waiting on final pieces of evidence before deciding on the need for a hearing, a Ministry of Justice spokesman said.

There was no timeline on when a decision would be made, but a finding was ''almost always'' available to the public, the spokesman said.
