A 25-year-old Dunedin medical student remains in a serious condition in the intensive care unit at Dunedin Hospital, after being struck by a petrol tanker in the city last week.

Vrushali Ramakrishna Savant sustained life-threatening injuries in the incident, on the corner of Frederick and Castle Sts, where she was walking at 8.25am on Friday.

She was hit at a pedestrian crossing by an Allied Petroleum tanker and trailer, which had been travelling west on Frederick St and was turning south into Castle St.

An investigation by the police serious crash unit continued at the weekend. It would be some time before reports into the incident were completed, Senior Sergeant Steve Aitken said.

He said Miss Savant was in her final year of study at the University of Otago and was working as a trainee intern at Dunedin Hospital.

Her family from Auckland had travelled to Dunedin to be with her, Snr Sgt Aitken said.

Anyone who witnessed the crash is urged to contact Dunedin police on (03) 471-4800.
