Vegan burger outlet opens in Dunedin

Vegetarian Leigh Morris, of Dunedin, enjoys the first ‘‘cheese’’ burger sold at the opening of vegan burger restaurant, Burger Plant, yesterday.

Free fries were given out with burgers to the first 50 customers at the Great King St store.

The menu includes plant-based loaded fries and donuts.

Mr Morris said he had not previously bought much fast food but would in the future.

‘‘The most fantastic thing about that burger is no animals died in making it,’’ he said.

Chef and owner of the restaurant Thomas White also has a stall at the Otago Farmers Market.

He earlier said he hoped his plant-based menu would redefine the concept of fast food.

If people hate meat so much, why keep the meat names?
Don't call it a burger, no sausages, get your own names

FauxVurger *smirk* I should copyright that!

I don't hate meat. I love it. I am also a bit of an aging fatty and it is about time I started looking after myself a bit. If I can substitute some of the lower quality meat out of my diet I can save the calories for the occasional Wagyu Ribeye. A good vegetarian burger is basically as good as a regular burger (to me) so I don't feel like I am missing out.
Using the names of the meats helps me choose what the burger filling is approximately emulating, informing my choice of what I want to eat.
