Man killed in Hawkes Bay crash

A man being treated for drinking petrol was killed after he jumped from an ambulance and into the path of a truck in the Hawkes Bay, police say.

The incident happened on State Highway 2, between Waipawa and Hastings, about 4.40pm today.

Police said the man turned up at the Waipukurau police station, where it was believed he may have ingested petrol.

An ambulance was called and was transporting the man to Hawke's Bay Regional Hospital when the incident happened.

The ambulance stopped on the side of the road near Te Hauke, where the man apparently jumped out the back door of the vehicle and ran across the road, straight into the path of an oncoming truck.

He died at the scene.

Police said traffic was being diverted along SH50 and all motorists were asked to avoid the SH2.
