Gadget-lovers keen to get their hands on the latest hot toy only have hours to wait, as Apple's hotly-anticipated iPhone 3G goes on sale after midnight.

A small crowd has been waiting outside Auckland's Queen Street Vodafone shop since Tuesday, as part of a dare - Jonny Gladwell's friends will pay for his phone if he lasts the two-and-a-half nights in the cold, the New Zealand Herald reported.

In Wellington, a party is being held outside the Lambton Quay store tonight, with street entertainment, music, food and beverages from 8pm.

The phone has brought widespread interest, but also criticism when pricing plans were revealed this week.

The cheapest price for the phone is $199, but the relatively low price tag comes with a catch - in order to get a phone at that amount, consumers must sign up to a two-year, $250-a-month call plan with Vodafone.
