Shirtless bonnet surfer brandishes baseball bat

A shirtless man brandishing a baseball bat and riding on the bonnet of a car sparked calls to Whakatane police last night.

A person who saw the vehicle cruising around King St about 9pm said about four others were inside and one man on the bonnet.

The man, who did not wish to be named, said the people in and on the car were yelling gang slogans as they drove around.

Sergeant Al Fenwick confirmed police were looking into the incident.

"We received reports of a car with someone on the bonnet," Mr Fenwick said. "We have been given the registration number for that car and will be making further inquiries today.

Reports of damage to property on King St could not be confirmed by police.
