Tasered man alleges assault

An Alexandra man who was subdued by police with a Taser has laid a complaint with the Independent Police Conduct Authority (IPCA) alleging he was assaulted by an Alexandra police officer the following day.

Daniel James Rogers (23) was sentenced in the Dunedin District Court in May to nine months' jail on four charges relating to an incident on May 15, in which a police officer was bitten on the foot by Rogers' Neapolitan bull mastiff dog, and a separate drink-driving charge from July 29.

During the May incident, he was pepper-sprayed before police employed a Taser to subdue him.

It was the first time Central Otago police had used a Taser.

Rogers pleaded guilty to resisting a constable and threatening to kill him, owning a dog that attacked a person, and breaching detention conditions.

The police officer who was bitten by the dog was off work for several days.

Southern district acting operations manager Acting Inspector Darryl Lennane yesterday confirmed a complaint had been made against the police and that the IPCA was assessing it.

"Although police have provided preliminary information to the IPCA after the IPCA received a complaint, police had not at this time received a request from the IPCA to proceed with a formal investigation," he said.

Acting Insp Lennane said the officer who was the subject of the complaint remained on active duty.

The Otago Daily Times understands the complaint alleges a policeman assaulted Rogers while he was in custody and being transported to Dunedin.
