"This is a rare beast," Wes Davies said this week, as he admired a 1957 Dual Ghia at Tempero Coach and Motor Company in Oamaru.

Mr Davies and the Simply Classics Charitable Trust are searching for two classic cars to restore and sell, with proceeds going to Ronald McDonald Houses in Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland, and CanTeen nationally.

Mr Davies has sought public help in the search.

The cars must be suitable for restoration and, on completion, estimated to have a value exceeding purchase and restoration costs.

The Dual Ghia, which fitted the criteria, was one of 132 built.

Thirty-two were known to still be in existence.

Mr Davies, who lives in Christchurch, will be travelling throughout the country looking at cars.

He has had a life-long passion for cars and also a hankering to give money to charity.

Both his parents died of cancer and while he had been blessed with healthy children, he realised others were not so fortunate.

Mr Davies hoped to raise about $100,000 for charity.

Progress can be followed on the Simply Classics website - www.simplyclassics.co.nz
