In the first of our winter series Off Piste, profiling NZSki staff at Coronet Peak and the Remarkables, Heather Turnbull takes five minutes to fill us in on the ups and downs of her job.

Name: Heather Turnbull, of Whangarei.

Job: NZSki Guest Services assistant.

Q How many seasons have you done in this job and why did you choose it?

A This is my first season and I'm doing it as an internship from QRC (Queenstown Resort College), but there are quite a few of us doing it. I am doing a diploma in adventure tourism management, specialising in snow sports. It is pretty fun.

Q How would you describe the work?

A It is quite chilled but it is early in the season and we are not that busy at the moment, so get plenty of days to ride. The crew is really good this year, so I'm excited.

Q What's the best thing about it?

A Obviously getting to ride, but also meeting new people from all over the world, which is what Queenstown is all about. It doesn't get boring.

Q And the worst thing about it?

A Getting up early, going to work when it's dark and going home when it's dark.

Q How would you describe life in Queenstown?

A It's awesome - I don't want to leave. I'm trying to look for a house to buy!

Q What's the best advice you have for someone moving to Queenstown for seasonal work?

A Have patience and everything will work out.

Q What has been your most amusing skifield experience to date?

A I did a few tree runs in Canada where I've been following people and they go straight into a tree and get buried in snow. I always stop to take a picture first before helping them out.
