Waitaki MP Miles Anderson has welcomed the declaration of drought support for Canterbury and Otago farmers.

The support follows Agriculture Minister Todd McClay’s extension of the medium-scale adverse event classification in place for the Marlborough, Nelson and Tasman districts to now cover the Canterbury and Otago regions.

"This decision will unlock additional support for farmers and growers across the Canterbury and Otago regions as the intense dry spell persists and looks unlikely to improve in the short-term."

Mr Anderson said the classification meant further support for farmers and growers was unlocked, including tax relief, as well as enabling MSD to consider Rural Assistance Payments.

"Up to $70,000 will be provided to Rural Support Trusts in North, Mid, South Canterbury and Otago to facilitate community and one-on-one support for affected farmers and growers."

Mr Anderson thanked Rural Communities Minister Mark Patterson for his assistance in securing the funding, and his work visiting affected farmers, growers and sector groups to discuss the challenging weather conditions.

"In many parts of Otago and South Canterbury there has been barely any rain since January.

"I encourage farmers and growers who require support or struggling with the conditions to contact their local Rural Support Trust on 0800 787 254."
