Cavalcade winds down with parade, hoe down

All trails lead to Waikaka today as the Southland township prepares for its biggest party of the year.

The Otago cavalcade, involving dozens of riders, walkers and support crews, has been traversing various trails throughout Otago and Southland for the past week, and the journey ends at noon when they assemble for a mass grand parade through Waikaka.

Cavalcade organiser Roberta Laraman said the weather over the past two days had made the trip even more enjoyable, and everyone involved was looking forward to arriving at their mutual destination, having a cleanup, catching up with friends and enjoying the hoedown at night.

The only sad part of the cavalcade had been an incident on the light wagons trail where a horse, who had taken part in many cavalcades, had to be put down after breaking its leg.

Mrs Laraman said that had affected everyone on the ride but they were determined to get to Waikaka and enjoy the hospitality planned there.

She had visited all but one of the trails yesterday and said trail bosses and participants were all relishing their experience.

"It's been a marvellous experience for everyone involved and they all can't wait to get into Waikaka and have some more fun."

The town will welcome the riders with a grand parade at noon.

Participants will then clean up, sort out their horses and prepare themselves for the traditional hoedown where up to 1000 are expected.
