Cricket: Ryder heading home for treatment

New Zealand will have to do without Jesse Ryder for the one-day cricket series in India as he returns home to recover from injury.

The burly Wellington right-handed batsman has been troubled by a strained calf muscle throughout the test series here, and required a runner for the duration of his innings when the tourists lost the third and deciding test by an innings and 198 runs in Nagpur.

Ryder made 22 before hitting part-time spinner Suresh Raina down the throat of the fieldsman at deep mid off as New Zealand folded like a deck chair to be dismissed for 175 in their second innings early on the fourth afternoon at VCA Stadium.

Within hours, team management announced that the 26-year-old would now return home and had been replaced in the one-day squad by provincial teammate James Franklin.

Allrounder Franklin has been with the tour party since being rushed in for Canterbury fast bowler Hamish Bennett, who sustained a groin injury during the first test at Ahmedabad, where Ryder scored his third test century.

Days later team management let it slip that Franklin was not in fact a direct replacement for Bennett, but instead that he was called to the subcontinent as cover for Ryder.

Ryder's injury was managed to such an extent that he emerged from the test series with 274 runs at an average of 54.8.

Coach and selector Mark Greatbatch said Ryder showed great determination to push through the discomfort of the injury in the second and third tests but it was clear the injury had not improved.

Also, the compressed nature of the five-match one-day series -- which starts at Guwahati on Sunday and ends at Chennai on December 10 -- did not allow sufficient time for Ryder to fully recover.

"We believe it is best for Jesse to return to New Zealand where he can undergo further assessment and continue his rehabilitation," Greatbatch said.

"While it's obviously disappointing for Jesse this gives James a wonderful opportunity. His ability with the bat and ball make him the ideal replacement."

Ryder's departure means the recalled Jamie How is likely to open the batting alongside Brendon McCullum, with Franklin contesting for a spot in the middle order.
