Cricket: England, India thriller ends in tie

England captain Andrew Strauss struck a magnificent 158 to help his side to a thrilling tie with India on the final ball on Sunday in a memorable World Cup match.

Sachin Tendulkar struck a superb 120 to give India a flying start at the Chinnaswamy Stadium and was helped by useful contributions from Yuvraj Singh (58) and Gautam Gambhir (51) before the co-host was pegged back by a late flurry of wickets from England bowler Tim Bresnan, who returned a career best of 5-48.

Though the total seemed like it would assure India of a comfortable win in the Group B match, a spectacular innings from Strauss and a vital knock of 69 by Ian Bell put England on course for victory in the closing overs.

However, England's power play backfired as India's pace bowler Zaheer Khan (3-64) removed both off successive balls to line up heart-thumping finish.

Suddenly, India looked destined for victory, only for a rash of sixes from England's tailenders to help earn a tie.
