Otago coach Vaughn Johnson is taking a break from his role with the Volts to address stress-related issues.

Johnson did not travel with the Otago team to Hamilton for its one-day match against Northern Districts in Hamilton yesterday and will remain on leave indefinitely.

Assistant coach Nathan King will continue to stand in as head coach in his absence.

Otago Cricket Association chief executive Ross Dykes said his concern at this time was for Johnson's wellbeing, and asked media and public to respect the 53-year-old's right to privacy.

''We all hope he makes a speedy recovery, and is able to return to full health as soon as possible,'' Dykes said in a press release.

''We are unable to make any further comment out of respect for his privacy.''
