New Zealand have a lot to do if they are to save the first test against Australia at the Basin Reserve.

Australia dominated the second day, reaching 463 for six at stumps and hold a 280 run lead.

Usman Khawaja and Adam Voges were the stars of the day, with both of the in-form batsmen scoring big centuries.

After resuming on 57 this morning, Khawaja made it through to 140, scoring his fourth century in his past six test innings'. Alongside Adam Voges, he put on 168 runs for the fourth wicket, before he was dismissed lbw by Trent Boult.

Boult claimed the wicket of Mitchell Marsh two balls later, a brilliant, and somewhat ironic, caught and bowled, but Voges and Peter Nevill settled in for another good partnership.

Voges, who controversially avoided being bowled because of a no-ball call last night, went on to finish the day on 176 not out. His total, at present, is the third highest by an Australian in New Zealand and was his third century in a row. Even more impressive is the fact that he became the first man to score over 500 runs without being dimissed in test matches, having managed 106 not out and 269 not out in his past two innings'.

Corey Anderson claimed Nevill after tea and Peter Siddle came in to finish the day unbeaten on 29.

It was a tough day for the New Zealand bowlers, struggling to get much out of the pitch and rarely looking like making a breakthough.

Trent Boult was the pick of the Kiwi bowlers, claiming two wickets, taking his figures to two for 80.
