Racing: Precise picking

Well done to Otago racing commentator Jason Teaz, who tipped out Saturday's Pick6 in last Friday's paper.

I did have Queenofharpz in my original selections, but I had to cut back to produce a cheaper alternative.

I know, excuses excuses.

For a $50 spend on Jason's bet, you would have received $210 back in the hand, so it would have been a profitable day out even with so many favourites rolling in.

Who knows where?

This subject has graced Racing Matters before, but it's worth airing again.

The Southland Racing Club's meeting yesterday was held at Gore due to track issues at Ascot Park.

No worries.

But on the TAB site, the meeting was described as "Invercargill Races at Gore''.

I haven't popped down to Invercargill recently, but I think there's still a bit of green space between Kennington and the lower reaches of Mataura, let alone between Invercargill and Gore.

Let's not confuse the issue and just call them the Gore races on the TAB site, regardless of which club is running the meeting.

Pride can be put to one side for sake of clarity.

Time ticking away

An update on the furore in Australian thoroughbred racing, with Racing Victoria's trial of 30-minute gaps.

As you would have seen in a brief last Saturday, Racing New South Wales saved the punters by moving their race forward three minutes on Saturday afternoon, avoiding the worst clash on the schedule.

Well done to Racing NSW for putting the punters first.

But guess what?

Racing Victoria is extending its trial by another week, as it was disappointed by Tabcorp's decision to push the Caulfield races, which clashed, across to the subscription-only Sky Racing 2.

Therefore, it couldn't get a accurate reading on turnover figures.

Really?

You couldn't have seen that coming, Racing Victoria, as you basically butchered long-standing schedules for your own benefit?

Then again, we've come to expect this level of self-awareness from the state that thinks the world revolves around the AFL.

Go Hawthorn, by the way.

Come on in

Numbers were slightly disappointing on course at Wingatui on Saturday, from my uneducated eye.

I'm always told by those fierce Taieri dwellers that the weather is better out there than in town and, to be fair, they might have been right on Saturday.

It was an overcast, drizzly mess when I opened the curtains in Dunedin, which may have put a few people off.

You can't argue with the results, though - almost without fail, the best horses won the races and they won from all parts of the track, which is a credit to track manager Wayne Stevens and his team.

Lazy Fiver

Another multi for you tonight at Addington - Field Marshal (race 2) into Locharburn (race 9).

Maybe throw in a place bet on Monty Python (race 6) to spice it up.
