Good things ...

Matt Smith.
Matt Smith.
One of the delights of this job is meeting some of the "hard shots" around the place.

And it’s fair to say Ginger Woodhouse is one of those.

He’s always up for a chat when you see him at the races but perhaps the most remarkable thing about his starring role in the latest round of the Mainland Cheese advertisements is the fact his role was non-speaking!

But who needs to speak when you’ve got a grin as cheeky as Ginger’s?

We look forward to seeing what delights he will bring in future editions of the advertisements.

... take time

Ginger’s step into the spotlight got Racing Matters thinking about what other products could be promoted by Otago racing personalities.

This writer is in constant fear about his hairline possibly receding, so will leave out the bald jokes.

However, clerk of the course Graeme Mee would be a perfect frontman for Oddfellows mints — in fact, he should have shares in Nestle, considering how often his clerk of the course horses are spoiled with a mint or two.

Forbury Park president Gerald Cayford would be very comfortable at the forefront of the whitebating industry, considering how often he takes his bus away for a sojourn to a river bulging with whitebait.

Former Otago Racing Club chief executive Andre Klein was rarely parted from a tweed blazer so could probably get some promo work for Rodd & Gunn, while we would love to hear Oamaru trotting trainer Phil Williamson provide the voice-over to promote a greatest hits compilation of his beloved Slim Dusty.

On the road again

New Zealand Racing Board chief executive John Allen is heading around the country this month getting insight from the public at a series of roadshows.

During my 4 years with Trackside, I worked under three chief executives (and one acting CEO) so it is good to see at least some consistency at the top of the NZRB tree.

Aside from discussing the NZRB’s Statement Of Intent, a spokesman for Allen told The Informant he wants feedback from the industry participants and punters in general, so the best way to register is go to http://www.nzracingboard.co.nz and look for "A Conversation with NZRB" under the latest news section.

The Dunedin session is at Forbury Park on August 23 from 4pm to 5pm.

Lazy Fiver

Stunin Dude delivered in the Kurow Cup and paid a zesty $4.

If Second Innings starts in the 0-1 win hurdle (race 1) at Riccarton tomorrow, he will be particularly tough to bowl.

Excuse the pun.
