Rugby: Waitaki Boys' win in tough conditions

Waitaki Boys' High School ran out 40-15 winners over Otago Boys' High School 2nd XV in the rain at Bishopscourt in the Otago Secondary Schools First XV competition today.

After Otago Boys' got the better of the first 10 minutes, Waitaki Boys' hit back with three tries through their forwards to take a 19-3 lead. They struck again with a length of the field try under the posts early in the second half, before scoring another soon after.

From there it became a battle in the weather, with Otago Boys' scoring two tries and Waitaki Boys' managing one more.

Waitaki Boys' coach Wayne Kinzett said his team was happy with a good performance in the tough conditions.

"Obviously it was tough with the weather, but overall it was quite good," he said.

"I was pretty happy because [the conditions] do change the game and I needed us to change our mindset, so I was pleased that they did try to play to the conditions."

"There were still some really good tries moving the ball. We're pretty happy, [it was a] softer track [and there were] not many injuries, so its just onwards and upwards and keep trucking along really."

He said Otago Boys' played well although felt the conditions may have hindered them.

"Typical 'OBs'," he said when asked about their opposition.

"They're a strong side, quite a big forward pack too.

"I think they probably struggled a little bit with the conditions, but they played quite well and we knew they would."

Looking ahead Kinzett hoped to see his side put together a complete performance as they look ahead to their match-up with South Otago High School in two weeks time.

"There's plenty to work on. Just fine-tuning things I think," he said.

"Overall we're not far away, but we haven't put that 100% game together yet, so that's obviously our goal.

"We're at home next week, which is great. Then [the week after is] obviously the big one for us, in Balclutha against South Otago."

In other games South Otago High School beat Dunstan High School 36-11 in the top four showdown of the weekend at Dunstan. St Kevin's College won 45-39 to deny Mount Aspiring College their first win of the season, a week after Mount Aspiring pushed King's High School close.

King's bounced back from that narrow win, with a 47-5 victory over Taieri College, while John McGlashan College remained unbeaten with a 56-0 win over Kavanagh College.
