Rugby: Alhambra Union beats Kaikorai 32-3

Matt Clutterbuck bade a triumphant farewell to Dunedin rugby when he captained Alhambra-Union to a comprehensive win as it retained the Murphy Memorial Trophy at Bishopscourt.

Clutterbuck was part of a dominant loose forward trio and scored one of Alhambra-Union's five tries as a reward for his outstanding support play.

Kaikorai was extremely competitive in the first half and, but for a handling error on defence, it would have been much closer than 10-0 at the break.

But Alhambra-Union was almost totally dominant in the second spell as it scored four fine tries despite playing into a stiff and bitterly cold wind.

Wayne Gibson scored two, the first an excellent 80m team try which was initiated by fellow winger Karne Hesketh.

Hesketh himself scored after he was given an overlap and the Alhambra-Union machine clicked into gear as the tight forwards monopolised possession and its loosies won the battle of the breakdown.

Clutterbuck, Wahari Waitohi and Mana Faraimo were an effective loose trio, Mitch Ewen was a mobile lock and loosehead prop Dane Maraki had a fine all-purpose game.

Luke Reihana was a steadying influence in the backline, Hesketh and Gibson were full of running on the wings and Peter Breen was an innovative fullback.

Joe Glucina gained good line-out ball for Kaikorai and Adam Hill and Simon Maole were effective in the tight-loose, but the backs had few opportunities.

Alhambra-Union 32 (Wayne Gibson 2, Peter Breen, Karne Hesketh, Matt Clutterbuck tries; Luke Reihana 2 conversions, penalty goal), Kaikorai 3 (Cam Rutherford penalty goal).

Half-time: Alhambra-Union 10-0.

Referee: Scott Taylor.
