Rugby: Dunedin beats Kaikorai 29-9

Dunedin dominated possession and territory to gain a comfortable win over Kaikorai at Kettle Park.

Dunedin scored four sparkling tries to get the bonus point, but it could easily have won by more if there had not been so much aimless kicking in the first spell.

Dunedin had all the ball and dominated the scrum, and the line-out through lock Michael Gurran, while Scott McKee, Jon Crossan and hooker Sam Anderson-Heather were lethal in the loose.

Anderson-Heather was the stand-out player in the game with his support play and speed in the loose and his tackling around the fringes.

Shaan Davis had a tidy game at first five-eighth and the midfield pairing of Simon Davey and Michael Walding were a potent attacking unit.

Flanker Adam Hill was the best of the Kaikorai forwards and centre Matt Direen had a strong defensive game in the backs.

Dunedin took a 10-6 lead at the end of the first spell when wing Tumua Ioane scored after a break by McKee and Crossan.

Dunedin added three more tries and 19 more points in the second spell that began with a tight head by Anderson-Heather.

Backs and forwards combined in a movement that led to Walding's try.

Dunedin 29 (Tumua Ioane, Michael Walding, Jon Crossan, Will Henry tries; Josh Hamilton 3 conversions, penalty goal), Kaikorai 9 (Cam Rutherford 2 penalty goals, Matt Direen dropped goal).

Half-time: Dunedin 10-6.

Referee: Dave Kennedy.
