Rugby: Forwards 'outstanding'

It was the first win for Otago coach Cory Brown but he was not taking any of the credit.

And he knows it is a quick turnaround to face the hottest team in the land.

Otago grabbed its opening victory of the season with a last minute 34-27 victory over Taranaki in New Plymouth on Saturday night.

Played in pouring rain, the win came courtesy of some gutsy play by the side, scoring four tries in the second half, including the winner in the 83rd minute.

It was a pleasing victory for Brown, who paid credit to his hard working team, which had to come back from a 22-6 halftime deficit.

''The forwards were just outstanding. The scrum was excellent and I think we only lost one lineout which is good going in those sort of conditions,'' he said.

''The bench guys made a really good contribution to the match and were great. When they got on the gave us really good energy and lifted everyone.''

The last minute try to win the game was a result of some hard work, and showed the side had improved since its first game of the season.

''It was outstanding control in what were really tough conditions. I think it was something like the 25th phase ... we were playing for the penalty to be honest but we just kept going down the field.

''The guys really enjoyed that and are soaking up the win. Tries like that came from a lot of hard work at training. We have shown some improvements from the first game.''

Lock Tom Franklin played a full 80 minutes despite not having been on the paddock for nearly three months and his control, especially at lineout time, was a big help to Otago.

The first 40 minutes was disappointing for Otago and Brown said the kicking game was not good enough from the visiting team.

''We had a lot of inaccuracies with our kicking and chase. We just needed to focus on that a bit more. We needed to kick with purpose and for people to chase hard with urgency to put pressure on them.''

Otago won the territory battle in the second half against a Taranaki side, which is surprisingly winless after three games.

Brown said it was good to get the victory, his first as Otago coach, but it was not about him, it was about the players and Otago, and he was pleased the players had got the reward for their effort.

Otago does not have a lot of time to soak up the victory.

It takes on premiership leader Tasman at Forsyth Barr Stadium on Friday night.

''It doesn't get any easier and Tasman is going to be a big challenge for us. But the boys are keen and will be up for the game. Tasman really try to apply pressure. They kick they ball to you and don't like to play in their own half. So we'll have to combat that.''

There were no major injuries from the match for Otago although rangy forward Josh Dickson picked up a head knock near the end but it is not believed to be serious.

In other games over the weekend, Canterbury beat Auckland 27-21 at Eden Park and Wellington beat Northland 29-0 in Wellington.

Yesterday, Waikato beat Bay of Plenty 43-10 in Tauranga while North Harbour beat Southland 26-25 in Invercargill.
