Rugby: Nine-try Taieri thrash Zingari

Midfield back Kori Rupene sparked Taieri's nine-try scoring spree at Peter Johnstone Park when he broke through the centre and scored the first try midway through the first spell.

He made the break for two tries by centre Kieran Moffat on either side of halftime to break Zingari-Richmond's resistance.

The Zingari pack had been in control for the first 20 minutes, with lock Tom Rowe making six clean lineout takes, including two from Taieri throws. He was backed by aggressive displays by loose forwards Chris Bell and Brady Carmichael.

The Taieri backs ran aggressively and were most dangerous when counterattacking from their own 22m.

One of the strongest runners with the ball was Kurt Schroder, who counterattacked with zeal when he played at fullback in the first spell and added punch to the backline when he moved to first five-eighth in the second spell.

It was a try-scoring bonanza in the second spell as Taieri sustained its punishing attacks. It was made easier in the last 20 minutes when Zingari ran out of steam.

Moffat was a rock in the midfield and his strong defence stopped Zingari's attacking attempts.

No 8 Charlie O'Connell was aggressive with his strong tackling and driving runs while openside flanker Willis Scott linked with the backs to sustain the continuity of the attacks and his spot tackling stopped Zingari's attempts to attack. Hooker Will Hurst was lively around the paddock.

Taieri 56 (Kieran Moffat 2, Kori Rupene 2, Hayden Parker, Ryan Hammer, Willis Scott, Will Hurst, Tayler Fiddes tries; Parker con, pen, Kurt Schroder 3 con), Zingari-Richmond 7 (Brady Carmichael try; Mark Hunter con).  Halftime: 20-0.
