Rugby: Pirates beat Kaikorai 31-5

Pirates turned on the heat in the second spell, scoring three tries and 25 points to outclass Kaikorai at Bishopscourt.

First five-eighth Glenn Dickson used the strong wind to his advantage to give Pirates the field position that they used to score two of their three tries.

Lively halfback Steve Bruce kept the defence guessing with his sniping runs and created opportunities out wide.

Two of the tries were scored by lock Anthony Teaupa, who was dangerous with the ball in hand and difficult to stop when driving close to the line.

The other try was made by midfield back Andrew Bremner, who scooped up a loose ball 40m out and galloped downfield.

When he was blocked, flanker Garth Swan was in support to score the try.

In the forwards, props Daniel Johnson and Shane Parata dominated the scrum and flanker Josh Clark kept up the pressure in the loose.

The best try of the game was created by Kaikorai centre Matt Direen when he used his silky skills to break the defence and put fullback Bevan Passmore in for an early try.

Pirates 31 (Anthony Teaupa 2, Garth Swan tries; Glenn Dickson 2 conversions, 4 penalty goals), Kaikorai 5 (Bevan Passmore try).

Half-time: Pirates 6-5.

Referee: Todd Pullar.
