Rugby: Zingari-Richmond beats Kaikorai 22-20

Zingari-Richmond regained the Tom Watkins Memorial Trophy with a solid first-half performance against Kaikorai at Montecillo.

The Colours scored 22 points to lead 22-7 at the break and held on in the second spell to win the game.

Zingari led 10-7 midway through the spell when first five-eighth Jonny Noakes intercepted 30m out and scored close to the posts.

The decisive moment in the game came after 28 minutes when Kaikorai halfback Guy Ferguson was sin-binned for indiscriminate use of the boot.

Zingari scored two tries and 12 points when he was off the paddock, to take a decisive grip on the game.

Zingari monopolised possession in the first spell with Brady Carmichael controlling the line-out, hooker Mason Pomare making some strong driving runs in the tight and loose forwards Ryan Newman and Kris Miller lively.

The best Zingari back was second five-eighth Ben Kent with his strong tackling and aggressive running.

The game changed in the second spell with Kaikorai first five-eighth Cam Rutherford playing a decisive role to score two tries and 20 points.

He used the wind effectively to keep the advantage with Kaikorai and was backed by Matt Direen at centre.

No 8 Kensack Palepoi looked dangerous with the pick and go and made a lot of ground off the back of the scrum.

Lock Clark McNabb dominated the line-out and prop Jim Stevenson was solid in the front row.

Zingari Richmond 22 (Matt Gordon, Jonny Noakes, Ben Kent tries; Noakes 2 conversions, penalty goal), Kaikorai 20 (Cam Rutherford 2 tries; 2 conversions, 2 penalty goals).

Half-time: Zingari 22-7.

Referee: Jeff Grubb.
