Two residents will vie for a Christchurch community board seat after it was left empty due to a lack of candidates in the October elections.

Dawn Sutton, of Church Bay, and Teddington's Scott Winter will both run as independents in the Banks Peninsula Community Board by-election on February 18 to fill the vacant Mt Herbert Community Subdivision seat.

Ms Sutton says she wants to help deliver what people in the area want and need - in particular, roading and maintaining and improving Christchurch City Council-owned properties and facilities.

She has been a registered nurse for almost 40 years, and says her people skills and familiarity with a busy lifestyle will give her the experience required to fill the role.

“I like busy. It keeps me interested and I like being part of the community - I always have.”

Mr Winter said he put his hand up because he is sick of “sitting on the sidelines” when it comes to dealing with issues in the community.

The building company owner says he wants to tackle roading maintenance, infrastructure and bring public amenities up to scratch at places such as wharves and the Godley House site.

Low pay has been cited as one of the reasons five former board members opted not to stand for another term.

Community board members receive $9864 and the chairperson $19,729.

As members work about 20 hours a week, they would receive roughly $120 a week after tax.

However, both Ms Sutton and Mr Winter said the pay was not a factor in their decision to run.

Said Mr Winter: “If 20 hours is what it takes to speak on behalf of the people and mediate with the council, that’s what I’ll put in.”

Voting will open on January 27 and close at noon on February 18.

A first past the post electoral system will be used to determine the successful candidate.

Residents within the subdivision area who are not on the electoral roll but want to vote should phone 0800 36 76 56, visit www.vote.nz or obtain an enrolment forms at a post shop or city council library. You can enrol to vote up until 4pm on February 17.
