Crash causes delays on Christchurch's Northern Motorway

    A crash on Christchurch's Northern Motorway blocked traffic heading north for several hours on Wednesday.

    A Waka Kotahi NZTA Canterbury spokesperson said the crash happened about 2.25pm.

    The vehicle was initially blocking two lanes just north of the Waimakariri Bridge and there was heavy congestion in the area. 

    As of 4pm on Wednesday, a lane drop was still place.

    "SH1 Christchurch Northern Motorway currently has a lane drop in place northbound just by the Tram Rd off-ramp due to an earlier crash," the spokesperson said.

    "Motorists are advised to take extra care merging and to expect some delays."
