'Extremely cold' elderly missing woman found

An elderly Christchurch woman reported missing last week was found on Tuesday night.

Valerie Hargrave, 81, left her Woolston home in the St John St area about 10.30am on Saturday.

It is understood she was living in a retirement village complex. On Tuesday morning, concerns for her welfare were growing, although family, friends and volunteers continued efforts to find her.

Detective Senior Sergeant Colin Baillie said on Tuesday night after days of extensive searching by police teams, assisted by members of the public, she was located the suburb of Ferrymead about 5pm.

“She was extremely cold, but is talking to police and will be sent for a medical examination.

“Her family have been notified of this great result.”

Before Valerie was found, about 70 concerned residents searched the streets around Woolston, hoping to find her.

Search organiser Shane Casbolt said on Tuesday morning Valerie had dementia and may have been confused, disoriented, or seeking shelter close to home.

Police Search and Rescue, assisted by volunteers from LandSAR, also searched for the missing woman.
