'Love you, my sister': Mum of five named as victim of fatal Christchurch car crash

The 34-year-old mother of five who died after a single-car crash in Christchurch has been named. 

Miriata Lee Houkamau, 34, of Burnside, died in hospital after crashing into a fence on Grahams Rd near Waimairi Cemetery, between Cranbrook and Wayside Aves, about 10.50pm on April 27.

She was the only person in the car, police said.

Emergency services were called to the scene between Cranbrook and Wayside Aves about 10.50pm.

"The driver … was taken to hospital where she sadly died,” a police spokesperson said.

"Police’s thoughts are with her family. Enquiries into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing."

Police have since been trying to locate a motorist who witnessed the crash.

Houkamau's family and friends have reacted to media reports of the crash with sadness.

One person said on social media: “Love you, my sister”.

Another mourner said: “For the short time I knew Miriata, she was always cracking jokes and happy.”

Houkamau was a mother of five, The Press reported.

Her funeral was held in early May.

Police released CCTV images of another vehicle at the scene, a witness who stopped but then left.

The witness was in a white SUV that turned left onto Grahams Rd from Wairakei Rd and initially stopped when the crash happened, but left before emergency services arrived.

"Police are eager to know the registration and speak to the male driver as we believe he may be able to help in our investigation,” a spokesperson said.

"If you know the registration of the vehicle, or are the driver, please contact police.”
