The father of a Cave Creek victim who campaigned extensively for public safety reforms following the disaster has died in Christchurch.
Harry Earl Pawsey, QSM passed away peacefully on May 26.
The 80-year-old was a resident at the Kevin Hickman Retirement Village in Riccarton.
His wife Virginia Pawsey predeceased him.
Their son, Kit Pawsey, 17, was one of 14 people who tragically died in the 1995 Cave Creek platform collapse on the West Coast.
Following the disaster, Earl and Virginia campaigned extensively for public safety reforms.
They successfully fought for legal reviews that led to major legislative changes, allowing the public to hold government departments accountable for negligence and loss of life.
Their advocacy forced the Department of Conservation to completely overhaul how public structures like huts, bridges, and viewing platforms are monitored and built.
A service for Pawsey was held last Friday at the Hawarden Hall.
