Two people have been charged after a slew of shoplifting and fraud incidents in Christchurch, police say.

Officers carried out search warrants in three suburbs on Wednesday and arrested a man aged 30 and a 63-year-old woman.

“The arrests we have made relate to shoplifting and fraud matters totalling in excess of $20,000,” Detective Sergeant Mike Freeman from the Christchurch Fraud Squad said in a statement.

Two properties in Hei Hei and Hornby were searched about 8.15am on Wednesday, while a third search warrant was executed later in the day.

“A significant portion of electrical equipment stolen from commercial premises has been recovered," Freeman said.

“Our understanding is that these items were stolen between 20 October and 3 November.”

The 30-year-old man appeared in the Christchurch District Court, facing two charges of causing loss by deception (over $1000), two charges of theft of a motor vehicle, and eight charges of shoplifting (over $1000). He was remanded in custody and due to reappear in court on Thursday.

The 63-year-old woman is due to appear in court on November 19, charged with causing loss by deception (over $1000) and theft of a motor vehicle.
