The Weedons Interchange, as part of the southern motorway, was expected to be fully completed in mid-2018 but now won't be finished until Christmas.
It has been revealed the Weedons interchange on the Southern Motorway was supposed to be fully completed a year ago.

New Zealand Transport Agency principal project manager Geoff Griffiths said it had been hoped that the interchange would be open for full use in late-2018.

He said there have been delays in opening the interchange fully.

“There were a number of factors contributing to the overall delay, which were not unexpected on a project the size of CSM2. Extra time was required to ensure the work was completed to the right specifications and to eliminate the risk of having to come back later to do more costly, disruptive and time-consuming repairs.

“The desire to be sure everything was right meant some weather-dependent work went into the 2018 winter period, pushing the interchange staging out a year.”

The overbridge, as part of the interchange, was officially opened in July.

The final piece of work to complete the project is opening the southbound off-ramp which will happen before Christmas.

This will happen once the southbound lanes of the motorway between Robinsons Rd and Weedons Rd are completed, Mr Griffiths said.

Weedons Residents Association chairman Stephen Bain said the delay is a shame for those who put up with the roadworks and interruptions while traveling.

“Although, when you look at the big picture, this new motorway and the interchange are going to be brilliant for the district and towns,” he said.
