Clothing sale in aid of Ōtepoti Dunedin Whānau Refuge popular

A queue stretched down Dunedin’s George St in central Dunedin on Saturday as crowds waited for the doors to open on a clothing sale with a cause.

The annual designer clothing sale in support of Ōtepoti Dunedin Whānau Refuge, run by University of Otago students as part of a wider fundraiser, opened to an even bigger crowd than last year.

Shoppers Lavina and and Sarah, who did not want to give their last names, were at the head of the queue.

Last year they also attended the event, and were keen to come back, but expected there would be a long line to get in.

They had been waiting since 9.30am, and the doors were due to open at 10am.

"It’s a good cause - 100% of the profits go to the refuge," Lavina said.

Stores and brands that donated to the sale ranged from Trelise Cooper, Annah Stretton and Marle to Swanndri, Icebreaker and Stirling Sports.

Last year the event raised over $21,000.

Co-organiser Rosie Joyce said the crowd outside the door ahead of opening seemed even bigger than last year and it was great to see the support.

"We’re really stoked. Obviously, the word got out."

After the doors opened at the 343 George St site, shoppers flooded in to rummage through the racks of clothing and other items set out for sale.

Among those out for a bargain was Natasha Drummy, who had never been to the sale before.

She really enjoyed op-shopping, and was happy to support a good cause, she said.

"It’s a little bit hectic, but it’s exciting."
