Holcim updates costs for plant

Holcim New Zealand says progress is being made on updating costings for its proposed $400 million cement plant near Weston and associated quarries and pits.

The detailed costings would form a key part of the formal proposal to go to the Holcim New Zealand board, and then to parent company Holcim Ltd, later this year.

In December, the New Zealand board approved further investigations into the project after it received resource consents for the cement plant and its associated limestone, tuff, sand and coal quarries in the Waiareka Valley.

The parent board will make the final decision on whether the project will go ahead.

"Until now, we've only had higher-level costing estimates.

"We're now getting into much more detail," Holcim New Zealand capital projects manager Ken Cowie said.

"Reviewing mechanical, electrical and civil aspects of the plant construction will give us a more accurate capital cost."

These costings would be further refined through the tendering process, he said.
