Luke Georgeson fired in the Ford Trophy for the Otago Volts last month.

Now, he is igniting the Plunket Shield.

The all-rounder took career best figures of five for 60 against Canterbury at Molyneux Park, Alexandra, yesterday, surpassing his previous best first-class figures of four for 33.

He then combined with Dale Phillips to help dig the Volts out of a hole after the home side found themselves three for 10 early on.

Their partnership put on 81 for the fourth wicket and helped the Volts to a 23-run lead at the end of the first day.

The Volts won the toss and elected to bowl.

Georgeson dismissed Canterbury’s danger hitters in Chad Bowes, Rhys Mariu and Cole McConchie.

To be fair, the entire Volts bowling attack were lethal, dismissing Canterbury for 144 in just 38.5 overs.

Jacob Duffy and Travis Muller also picked up two wickets apiece.

But Georgeson got them under way when he bowled Mariu for 10 and backed up the following ball trapping captain McConchie lbw.

That left Canterbury 24 for two.

Bowes guided some nice shots to the boundary to steady things, but he also succumbed to Georgeson and was caught behind by Max Chu — playing his 100th game for Otago across all three formats — on 25 runs.

Duffy then took his two wickets in the 11th over.

Leo Carter sliced a shot straight to Dean Foxcroft and Duffy rounded out the over with the wicket of Mitch Hay.

Former Volt Michael Rippon come to the crease and added 27 runs from 58 balls, Canterbury’s top scorer, before he was caught by Llew Johnson.

Canterbury’s tail were then picked off for 47 runs.

Former Volt Michael Rae made a nice cameo of not out for 18 runs, but Georgeson finished things off when he bowled another former Volt in Angus McKenzie.

The Volts looked strong but their batting started in similar style to Canterbury’s when Sean Davey picked up three wickets in the opening five overs.

He bowled Jacob Cumming for 2, then picked up the valuable wicket of Foxcroft the next ball and Jamal Todd (4) soon after.

Dale Phillips (40) and Georgeson (45) then combined to get the Volts back on track.

Johnson (5) and Ben Lockrose (16) went soon after and the Volts finished their day 167 for seven.

Chu (39) and Muller (12) will resume this morning.
