A Christchurch intersection has reopened after a crash on Wednesday morning that seriously injured a cyclist.

Police were called to the intersection between Selwyn St and Somerfield St about 5.40am.

A St John spokesman said one patient had been taken to Christchurch Hospital in a critical condition.

The intersection was closed and diversions were in place while the serious crash unit investigated.

However, the intersection was re-opened about 10am.
