An investigation is under way into the causes of two suspicious fires at Christchurch cell towers last night.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesperson said the first fire was at a tower near Burwood Hospital, off Mairehau Rd, about 8.30pm on Tuesday.

Crews from the Christchurch central and Woolston stations were called to the blaze and found both ends of the tower on fire on arrival.

The fire was put out but an hour later crews were called to another fire at a cell tower on Ferry Rd in Ferrymead.

Both fires were considered suspicious.

Police and fire investigators are due at the scenes today to determine the exact causes and whether the fires were linked.
