Canterbury Police are warning people to be on the lookout for scammers trying to swindle people posting about lost property or pets on social media.

Recently a number of Facebook users posting about lost property have been contacted by someone asking for money in return for information or help. People appealing for information about lost pets have also been targeted.

The scammer, who has no apparent connection with the stolen property, asks people to pay money in a bank account.

Police don't want to see anyone falling victim to this scam.

"We urge anyone who receives suspicious contact after advertising lost or stolen property to stay vigilant, and report it on 105.

"Never pay money or give personal details to someone you don't know or trust.''

Information on other scams that are currently operating can be found on the Consumer Protection NZ website: www.consumerprotection.govt.nz/general-help/scamwatch

Consumer Protection NZ, along with Netsafe, also provides helpful advice and information about keeping safe online.

Anyone who believes they are a victim of a scam, in person, over the phone or online, should immediately report to their bank, and to Police.
